Here are a list of books and videos on Photoshop that I recommend. I've read each of these books and can say that they present the material clearly, and are of good value. I also know each of the authors personally and agree with their method of training.

Adobe Photoshop CS Creative Studio

I love the format of this book. It has many great step-by-step examples of how to create really cool designs in Photoshop CS. What's most impressive are also how many variations are presented for each project. It really makes using Photoshop fun. Luanne Cohen is the author of this book and she has set the standard for how a step-by-step lesson ought to be. If you want to explore Photoshop and pick up some extra tips and tricks along the way, this is the book for you.

Photoshop Studio

If you've never read a book by Bert Monroy, this should be your first. Bert is known for "drawing" photographs in Photoshop and the surprise in the book is -- he doesn't use only Photoshop. Illustrator is also a key application that Bert uses to get his work done. The best part of the book is learning how easy it can be to apply simple techniques to add realistic shadows and effects to your art.
